Douglas was unsure about work and his future until the University of Manchester Hospitality Academy took him in the right direction

Douglas was a Carer for a while before his patient passed away, so he was out of work for 15 months before securing the opportunity in the University Of Manchester as a Building Attendant, through the University of Manchester’s House Services Academy.

Dougie AdairAfter being made redundant and to fill a gap whilst keeping his skills active he volunteered at The  British Heart Foundation, but  also attended  The Works and saw a leaflet advertising the roles where he was immediately interested.

Douglas was nervous going on the training course, but commented that not only was he made to feel at ease but he met a lot of new people, and that he felt at 51 years old it has changed him and made him a lot more self-confident.

Douglas welcomed the opportunity and has commented that he feels he has found a great opportunity and would encourage others to go for it!

After 9 years of being unemployed, Chris is working again!

Christopher, 59, Manchester.

Christopher had been unemployed for 9 years before starting the University of Manchester House Services Academy. He describes his previous job searches as relentless and fruitless.

The University of Manchester Hospitality Academy is back!

In conjunction with Verve People, the University of Manchester Hospitality Academy will be recruiting for bar, restaurant and hotel job vacancies in Manchester, throughout November and December. If you are looking for an opportunity to enhance your CV, or earn some money for Christmas, then this is an ideal opportunity for you.

There are a variety of jobs which will be available to you once you have completed the Academy.

All of the jobs will be temporary to cover the Christmas and New Year period, but as with our previous Academies, once you have built a relationship with an employer and proved that you are motivated and willing, the jobs can continue!

Hours: Various shift patterns and hours will be available to suit most people’s availability, during the daytime and the evenings.

Pay: £7.50 per hour + holiday pay

The Academy will prepare you and equip you with the skills you need for any of the jobs that are on offer, and will provide you with:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Hospitality Customer Services
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Food Safety
  • City & Guilds Level 1 Introduction to Facilities
  • Bar, Food & Wine Training in a specially designed training environment

 We will be assessing for the Academy on Wednesday 8th November, and will start the training on Monday 13th November, until Tuesday 21st November. The training will run daily from 0930-1630. The Academy must be completed in full for you to be eligible for the job opportunities.

The Works is recruiting for Amazon

If you are looking for an opportunity to enhance your CV, or earn some money for Christmas, Amazon sites in Manchester (Airport) and Warrington are currently recruiting for Warehouse Operatives to start in November, and December, for a minimum of 8 weeks work over the Christmas Period, and beyond. The jobs will be full time, working a 5 day on, 2 day off shift pattern. Day and night shifts are available.

Days: 0700 – 1800

0730 – 1830

Nights: 1830 – 0530

1900 – 0600

£7.65 – £9.36 per hour

These shifts include a minimum of a 30 minute break.

The Works will be starting a 1 week training academy, to equip you with the skills that you need to be able to carry out this job role, and to ensure that the job suits your employment needs. It will also provide you with a City & Guilds qualification in Facilities Management and Health & Safety.

Assessments for the course will be held on Tuesday 7th November 2017, and the course will begin on Monday 13th November 2017 for one week. The times of the course will be daily from 0930-1630.

Care information and recruitment day at The Works

On Monday 6th November Creative Support will be holding an information and recruitment afternoon at The Works, to speak to people who are interested in a career in care. They will be giving information on training, skills and jobs that they currently have available, and answering any questions that people may have relating to working in the care industry.

Creative Support

Our University of Manchester Construction Academy is back!


We will be launching our next Construction Academy this month, and the new academy will feature a 2 week training course, a CSCS test and card followed by a 4 week work placement with one of the University of Manchester’s main construction partners. After successful completion of the course and work placement, a guaranteed job interview will be offered.

The academy will offer the following qualifications:

  • City & Guilds Level 1&2 award in Employability
  • City & Guilds Level 1&2 certificate in an introduction to the facilities industry
  • City & Guilds Level 1 in Health & Safety in the construction environment

The total duration of the academy will be 7 weeks:

  • Weeks 1 + 2 – Classroom based learning @ The Works
  • Week 3 – Sitting CSCS/Health & Safety tests
  • Weeks 4-7 – Work placement on site with a University of Manchester construction partner

The academy will need to be attended in full (unless otherwise arranged) for the guaranteed interview to be offered.

The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge visit The University of Manchester – and plant a time capsule on the site of the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD)

Due to open in 2020, MECD is one of the single largest construction projects ever undertaken by a higher education institution in the United Kingdom.

MECD, which is under construction by Balfour Beatty, will be home to four engineering schools and two research institutes, comprising 1,300 staff and 7,000 students.

The University is committed to ensure that this project has a positive impact in terms of generating employment and training opportunities for people in the GM area seeking work in construction.

This project alone will create over 300 jobs and apprenticeships, supported by University of Manchester Construction Academy which has been specifically developed to ensure that construction businesses are able to recruit local residents with the skills the industry requires.
