The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge visit The University of Manchester – and plant a time capsule on the site of the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD)

Due to open in 2020, MECD is one of the single largest construction projects ever undertaken by a higher education institution in the United Kingdom.

MECD, which is under construction by Balfour Beatty, will be home to four engineering schools and two research institutes, comprising 1,300 staff and 7,000 students.

The University is committed to ensure that this project has a positive impact in terms of generating employment and training opportunities for people in the GM area seeking work in construction.

This project alone will create over 300 jobs and apprenticeships, supported by University of Manchester Construction Academy which has been specifically developed to ensure that construction businesses are able to recruit local residents with the skills the industry requires.
